Volvo Cars has unveiled its first extended-range plug-in hybrid, the new XC70 mid-size SUV. Boasting an impressive electric range of up to 200 kilometers, the XC70 sets a new benchmark for plug-in hybrids and represents a significant step in Volvo’s electrification journey.
Key Highlights
- First extended-range plug-in hybrid from Volvo Cars
- Electric range of up to 200 kilometers
- Built on the new SMA platform
- Initially available in China, with potential expansion to other markets
- Features modern Scandinavian design with advanced technologies
- Continues the legacy of the iconic original XC70 in a mid-size SUV format
The new Volvo XC70 is an extended-range plug-in hybrid, meaning it can travel longer distances on electric power alone compared to traditional plug-in hybrids. With an electric range of up to 200 kilometers, the XC70 allows drivers to complete most daily commutes without using gasoline, reducing emissions and fuel costs. For longer trips, an efficient combustion engine provides additional range and flexibility.
Designed with Volvo’s signature Scandinavian aesthetic, the XC70 features a commanding presence with clean lines and a dynamic silhouette. The front showcases a closed grille, inspired by Volvo’s all-electric models, and an active grille shutter that enhances aerodynamics and efficiency. The headlights incorporate Matrix LED technology, adjusting intelligently to road conditions for better visibility and safety. At the rear, vertical taillights integrated into the glass create a sleek, modern look.

Built on the new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, the XC70 is engineered for premium extended-range plug-in hybrids, blending advanced electrification with the spaciousness and versatility of a mid-size SUV.
Hakan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, stated, “The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification. It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars.”
The XC70 will initially be available for order in China later this year, with Volvo exploring potential expansion to other markets. More details will be revealed in the coming months.
